In addition to being one of America’s most beloved and successful actresses (the recipient of four Academy Awards), Katharine Hepburn was also a dedicated amateur artist. Her many paintings, drawings, and sculptures include unsparing portraits of herself, such as this caricature as Coco Chanel in Hepburn’s first and only Broadway musical, Coco. Having achieved iconic status in the 1930s and 1940s by playing strong, independent-minded women in mainstream Hollywood films, Hepburn was eager to embrace new challenges late in her career, believing “It’s better to try something difficult and flop than to play it safe all the time.” In her sixth and seventh decades, she achieved some of her finest performances in wide-ranging productions that included the twelfth-century historical saga The Lion in Winter (1968), the Edwardian romantic comedy Love among the Ruins (1975), and the contemporary family drama On Golden Pond (1981).
