- Sandra Cisneros is one of the most prominent Latina voices in American literature. In her first published work, The House on Mango Street (1984), she drew upon her experience as the daughter of a working-class Mexican American family in Chicago. A recipient of the coveted American Book Award, it became required reading in public schools and universities across the country. In 1995, Cisneros became the first Latina to be named a MacArthur Fellow. The New York Times and other national newspapers selected her novel Caramelo as a notable book of 2002. Cisneros projects different identities in her many portraits, as if alluding to the freedom of imagination she exercises as a writer. Sometimes she wears pink wigs or animal print coats; here, she is shown displaying her tattoo of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
