- Glass jar with paper label that reads in part “RUBIFOAM / CONTENTS 2 FLUID OUNCES / A DELIGHTFULLY FRAGRANT / AND / DELICIOUSLY-FLAVORED / LIQUID DENTIFRICE / FOR THE / TEETH / CONTAINS NO GRIT, NO ACID / NOR ANYTHING INJURIOUS / . . . / E. W. HOYT & CO. / PERFUMERS / LOWELL, MASS. U.S.A.” Eli Waite Hoyt (1838-1887) became proprietor of a drugstore in Lowell, Mass., in 1861, and began making and marketing a German Cologne a few years later. The firm introduced Rubifoam dentifrice in the early 1880s.
