Planters Dock Wine List

Object Details
- Description
- Planters Dock was a general merchandise store at the foot of Broadway in Oakland, California, during the 1940s. This Wine List is from the restaurant inside and shows a wide range of imported and domestic wines at a time when the majority of Americans were not familiar with different types of wine grapes or the practice of enjoying wine with a meal. If you were dining in Oakland, however, you were within an hour’s drive of California’s major wine regions in Napa, Sonoma, and Livermore, and could find some of the state’s best vintages on this list. Although the list is not dated, it appears to be from about 1945-47, judging by the prices and the offerings of white vintages from 1943-44.
- Of particular interest are the California wines, including Sparkling Burgundy from Paul Masson and Almaden, two giants in the California wine industry. The California white and red wines are dominated by Louis Martini and Wente, both historically significant winegrowing families in the Napa and Livermore Valleys respectively. While many producers were still using generic labeling for their wines—Chablis (white) and Claret or Burgundy (red)—this wine list shows early varietal (grape type) labeling in California. Diners could choose among Sylvaner, Johannisberg Riesling, Dry Semillon, Folle Blanche, Pinot Blanc, Grey Riesling, Pinot Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc for white wine. The reds included Zinfandel, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as the generic Claret and Burgundy.
