- In the aftermath of the failed April 1961 “Bay of Pigs” invasion of Cuba, President John F. Kennedy (left) sought the counsel and support of his predecessor, President Dwight D. Eisenhower (right). The two met at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland. While Eisenhower recorded much of the content of their conversations, the intricacies of their exchange remain unknown. A variant of this image was published in Time magazine with the caption, “The young President was learning,” in an article detailing how Kennedy’s first 100 days had been rather different from his early “illusions” for Cold War negotiations. For his part, Eisenhower supported Kennedy in public, but he struck a less enthusiastic tone when he wrote about him in his diaries. As Eisenhower noted on April 22, “Quite naturally a conversation such as this had no definite conclusion.”
