- Artistic director, choreographer, and dancer Bill T. Jones has devoted his career to expanding the parameters of dance. The tenth of twelve children born to migrant workers, Jones began exploring the possibilities of dance while in college, working in close collaboration with Arnie Zane. From the early 1970s until Zane’s death from AIDS in 1988, the two men created controversy and acclaim through choreography that incorporated politicized subject matter (such as homosexuality and racism) and multimedia elements. This poster documents Jones’s 1982 collaboration with artist Keith Haring and photographer Tseng Kwong Chi on a project merging body-painting, dance, and photography. Jones has created more than 140 works for his own dance company as well as many commissions for theater, musicals, and opera. His numerous honors include a MacArthur “genius” award, two Tony Awards, and the National Medal of Arts.
