- WOVEN LINEN STRIPS WRAPPED AROUND BUNDLE OF PROBABLE AVIAN BONES, SPECIES UNKNOWN. THE SKELETAL MATERIAL IS FIRMLY BOUND, HOWEVER, THE WRAPPINGS ARE DRY AND DETERIORATED.

- From NMNH Exhibit Hall "Eternal Life in Ancient Egypt" label for this artifact, 2011: Mummified bird of prey; Species: Falco tinnunculus, Eurasian kestrel; 600 B.C.-A.D. 100. The CT scan (left) of this mysterious bundle reveals a headless body. However, the shape of the leg and feet bones allowed scientists to identify it as a kestrel or kite, birds of prey still found in Egypt.
