- This is the stand for a full-scale model of the Sergeant missile.
- The Sergeant was the U.S.'s first operational large-scale solid propellant missile. Development of the Sergeant began at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and continued at the Thiokol Chemical Coporation. It was the third in a series of rockets produced at JPL named for Army ranks (Private, Corporal, and Sergeant). The missile was in operation from 1961 to 1978.
- The Sergeant missile was an important step in the development of large solid-fuel motors, most notably for the Space Shuttle's Solid Rocket Boosters.
- The Sperry Corporation donated this model to the Smithsonian in 1968.
