- Description
- This string model was constructed by Richard P. Baker after he joined the mathematics faculty at the University of Iowa in 1905. Baker believed that models were essential for the teaching of many parts of mathematics and physics, and over one hundred of his models are in the museum collections.
- The typed part of a paper label on the top of the wooden base of this model reads: No. 134 (/) Screw: locus of spherical (/) curvature. Model 134 is listed in Baker’s 1931 catalog as a model for differential geometry with the title shown. No dimensions are given.
- The planes, line segments, cone, cylinder and helix shown in this model are identical to those of Baker’s model 89 (MA.211257.012), although the color of the thread is different.
- The model reportedly sold for $5.00.
