- Members of the Sowerby-Clark China Expedition pose for a picture. Pictured are (Right to Left) Captain H.E.M. Douglas, George A.Grant, Nathaniel H. Cobb, Robert Sterling Clark, Arthur de Carle Sowerby. In 1908, Sowerby joined American millionaire Robert Sterling Clark on an expedition into Shansi and Kansu provinces of north China. Robert Sterling Clark (1877-1956) financed several collecting trips by Sowerby. Many of the specimens collected by the Clark-Sowerby expeditions were deposited in the United States National Museum.
