- Description
- Scene of a cemetery at night. The headless figure of the ghost of Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat, walks in foreground towards the left wearing a monk's robes. He holds his head in his left hand and a walking stick in his right. Beneath the image is the title: Lovat's Ghost on Pilgrimage, followed by a satirical poem: Disguis'd thro' Life, a Layman at ye block, Doom'd for Crimes in Pilgrimage to Roam, Where Vanity Inscribes my Father's Tomb, My headless Trunk resumes ye Monkish Frock, With Weary Steps, I Seek my Native Home, But Justice Now Denies my Carcase Home. (Design formerly attributed to Hogarth)
