Object Details

Artist
Rachel Thurston, born 1978
Sitter
Joy Cho, born 18 May 1979
Exhibition Label
Born Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Joy Cho was listed among Time magazine’s thirty “most influential people on the internet” in 2015 and 2016. The graphic design blog she began in 2005 was the start of what Cho has turned into an entrepreneurial wonder. It is now a lifestyle website offering advice and ideas on a variety of subjects, including home decor, entertaining and party planning, and baby and nursery needs. In addition to publishing books on starting a successful blog and the basics of creative design, Cho is also a design consultant for brands such as Target, Johnson & Johnson, and Petco. This portrait is from a group of photographs Rachel Thurston took of Joy Cho and her family at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in October 2013. For Thurston, the setting was a perfect way to depict Cho’s “joy,” which she conveys through her immensely popular colorful designs.
