- As this subtle parody of Mount Rushmore implies, Henry Kissinger and President Richard Nixon were especially close. As Nixon’s national security advisor (1969–75) and as secretary of state (1973–77), Kissinger helped Nixon engineer the opening of diplomatic relations with China. While Nixon was the planner, Kissinger was the mediator.
- During the Watergate scandal, Kissinger authorized wiretaps of the phones of journalists and government officials, demonstrating the Nixon administration’s paranoia. He was never criminally charged.
