- Description
- This Star radiator emblem belonged to a Star Four manufactured by Durant Motors, Incorporated from 1922 until 1928. Durant manufactured its Star automobile at a variety of different plants including ones in Long Island, New York, Lansing, Michigan, Oakland, California, and Toronto, Ontario, but most were produced in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The Star Four came in a variety of body styles and enjoyed popularity in its early years, but soon struggled as Durant Motors struggled, and was phased out in 1928 as the Star Six became the Durant Model 55. This emblem has a blue enamel background and a white rim that reads “DURANT MOTORS.” The center of the emblem has the Durant star logo; a Dragon on a shield that is on a five pointed star. The shield reads “Star” on a red background, below the shield reads “FOUR.”
- Radiator emblems are small, colorful metal plates bearing an automobile manufacturer's name or logo that attached to the radiators grilles of early automobiles. Varying in shape and size, the emblems served as a small branding device, sometimes indicating the type of engine, place of manufacturing, or using an iconic image or catchy slogan to advertise their cars make and model. This emblem is part of the collection that was donated by Hubert G. Larson in 1964.
