- Collections Deep Dive: Exploring Black History Month Projects with Tulani Salahu-Din
- Description
- In #BlackHistoryMonth 2021, Transcription Center #volunpeers transcribed over 16,000 pages of materials related to African American literature and writing! In the first event of this new monthly series, Caitlin Haynes (Program Coordinator, Smithsonian Transcription Center) is joined by Tulani Salahu-Din (Museum Specialist of Language and Literature, National Museum of African American History and Culture) for a discussion of the recently transcribed materials from James Baldwin, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and more incredible Black poets and authors. Tulani Salahu-Din (Museum Specialist of Language and Literature at the National Museum of African American History & Culture) has helped develop the Museum’s literature collection, acquiring objects associated with writers such as Lucille Clifton, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Sarah Elizabeth Wright, and James Baldwin. Her museum blog series titled “The Power of Poetry” provides a historical overview of African American poetry from the 19th century to the present. Her essay on the literary achievements of writer and activist Pauli Murray is an integral part of the museum’s digital exhibition Proud Shoes: A Classic in African American Genealogy. Chez Baldwin is her recent digital exhibition on the life and works of James Baldwin.
