- This is the printed PhD. dissertation of Richard P. Baker, a student in mathematics at the University of Chicago. Baker (1866-1937), of English birth, was a notable maker of mathematical models as well as a faculty member at the University of Iowa. Several of his models survive in Smithsonian collections.
