- Description
- John Minot Rice (1833-1901) and William Woolsey Johnson (1841-1923) found that midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy did not grasp the notion of a limit easily. In 1874, they published a calculus textbook that initially used what they called the method of rates or fluxions, and introduced the idea of a limit only late in the book. This is the third edition of that textbook, published in 1886. The book would remain in print at least as late as 1905. Signatures indicate that owners of the book included F. Thorton Arms of Johns Hopkins University, Herman F. D. Crownfield of Baltimore, and A.C. Crownfield of Mohawk, N.Y.
