This newsletter was created for the staff of the Bikini Scientific Resurvey in 1947. Operation Crossroads was an expedition to Bikini and the northern Marshall Islands in 1946 under the auspices of the Department of the Navy. Dr. Leonard P. Schultz, Curator of Fishes at the National Museum of Natural History, was in charge of the biological investigation of the reef fishes in the area. His investigations centered on the relative abundance of fauna before and after atom bomb tests. Specimens were collected for the purpose of comparison and to make possible a study of anatomical variations among the various island fish populations.
In 1947 scientists returned to resurvey the region to determine the impact of the atomic tests.

Summary
This first installment of the "Bikini Backtalk" newsletter explains the intent and practice of the newsletter, advertising itself as "by and for the staff of the project officer, Bikini Scientific Resurvey." Stating that its primary purpose is "to help all hands know each other better," the newsletter pledges to appear at "more or less regular intervals" over the next ten weeks, and will "attempt to record, in a rather intimate and personal way, the story of the Bikini Scientific Resurvey." As "a paper for the staff", it asks for the "cooperation of the staff," and hopes to receive contributions such as stories or cartoon ideas from them.
