Biographical / Historical
Estelle Shane Gross (1929-1992) was born and raised in New York City, and studied art at Penn State and Parsons School of Design. After moving to Philadelphia, she worked as a tour guide at the Philadelphia Art Museum and studied under painter and teacher Hobson Lafayette Pittman. Pittman told Gross that if she were to open a gallery, he would exhibit work with her. In 1969, Gross and Marlin McCleaf opened the Marlin McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After McCleaf departed from the gallery due to issues in his personal life, Gross became sole owner of the gallery and renamed it Gross McCleaf Gallery. Early artists exhibited at the gallery include Pittman, Fairfield Porter, Neil Welliver, Rackstraw Downes, Red Grooms and his wife Mimi Gross, Jane Piper, and Larry Day. After Estelle Gross' death in 1992, Sharon Ewing became the gallery owner and director. Ewing retired in 2020 and Rebecca Segall took over as the gallery's owner and director.
