- Image appears to be the excised frontispiece to Speke's Journal of the discovery of the source of the Nile, published in 1863 by William Blackwood and Sons (Edinburgh and London), featuring a facsimile of Speke's autograph. M150 is the accession number in the Russell E. Train inventory list of the Joseph F. Cullman 3rd Library of Natural History.

- Speke stands on what appears to be a shore line, next to his rifle and a navigational instrument (sextant?), although the background is likely to be a backdrop in the photographic studio.
