- Scope and Contents note
- Speke, addressing the publisher as "Caterer for the human mind," is sending him the narrative of his "first adventuring in Africa", commenting on what he has covered in the narrative and the "leading strings of fate" that will soon take him back to Africa. The document is marked by Blackwood with instructions for the printer and includes an initialed note. The publication of Speke's two articles in Blackwood's magazine fueled the arguments between Burton and Speke.
