- Scope and Contents note
- The document notes that at the last meeting of the Council of the Society on May 5th, Oates was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, having been proposed by Sir John Kirk and seconded by Dr. J.S. Keltie. With a marginal manuscript note by Caroline Oates (his mother): "Sent cheque for £ 45 on 7th. June, 1912, Thus Laurie is fellow for life C.A.O." Oates had in fact died two months earlier, in March 1912, than his election to the R.G.S., on his return from the South Pole with Robert Scott.
