- Scope and Contents note
- Written by Churchill prior to his departure to Southern Africa. The first is requesting "one of the new army rifles" to take to Mashonaland together with 500 rounds of ammunition (This rifle and the test carried out is referred to on page 112-115 of Men, mines and animals in South Africa, 1892); the second is acknowledging receipt and saying that it may have the "opportunity of testing itself against wild beasts possibly though I hope not against human beings."
