- Note
- This series consists of correspondence and other records generated during the writing of The Birds of Alaska. Co-author Frederick C. Lincoln (1892-1960) was an ornithologist who joined the Biological Survey in 1920. He rose through the ranks to the position of senior biologist and chief of the Section of Distribution and Migration of Birds, a position he held from 1940 to 1946. From 1946 until his death he served as assistant to the director, Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife. Correspondence between the co-authors concerns plans for the organization of the volume, notes on species, bibliographical materials, and other matters related to publication. Annotations and notes of the two authors to each other are also found throughout the series. Correspondence of Gabrielson and Lincoln with professional colleagues primarily concerns Alaskan birds. Also included in these records are a few subject files, reports, and miscellaneous notes used in writing the book, notes on the bird species of Alaska, drafts of chapters, and a few photographs.
