- Scope and Contents
- This series consists of biographical sketches of Messmore family members (Dorothy, Julia, George, William, and Francis) and a Christmas party invitation, undated, for Pamela Messmore. Also included are the identification cards for Francis Messmore from the 1933-1934 Century of Progress and 1939 World's Fair; a scripture service, with photograph of a burial mass for Edmund G. Decker (1897-1947); Francis Messmore's Fordham University paper "The Synthetic Dinosaur Brontosaurus" (circa 1940s); Soldier of the 34th Illinois Volunteers (1996) by Francis Messmore; and "Live to be 100," a typescript by Louis Dufour (1963). Also, Francis Messmore's rated hours for an Army extension course (1950) at the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth is included. Articles detailing Messmore and Damon's business include: "Just Mechanics and Brains,"Opportunity (1923); a typescript "From Props to Pachyderms" (undated); and a draft typescript of the company's history (1983). Newspaper and magazine article clippings and reprints contain stories about Messmore and Damon, Inc. Publications include, but are not limited to Literary Digest, Science and Invention, American Machinist, Popular Science, the Detroit News, New York Herald Tribune, Scientific American, and the New York Times.
- Collection Restrictions
- The collection is open for research. Social Security numbers are present and numbers have been rendered unreadable and redacted. Researchers may use the photocopies in the collection. The remainder of the collection has no restrictions. Reference copies for the audio discs do not exist. Use of these materials requires special arrangement with Archives Center staff. Gloves must be worn when handling unprotected photographs and negatives.
