- Scope and Contents
- This series consists primarily of correspondence, documentation about certain typefaces, and published materials. There is correspondence with Chauncey H. Griffith (1879-1956), vice president of typographical development for the company. Griffith was responsible for designing many of the typefaces used in publications and he developed a font for Devanagri, an Indian dialect, and Excelsior (1931). Correspondence with Rudolph Ruzicka (1883-1978), is also present in this series. Ruzicka was a consultant to the Mergenthaler and designed typefaces, working closely with with Griffith. Two files relate to William A. Dwiggins (1880-1956), a type designer and calligrapher who consulted with Mergenthaler beginning in 1929. Like Ruzicka, Dwiggins worked closely with Griffith. Where known, correspondence with specific Mergenthaler staff or other individuals and/or organizations is noted. For example, Lorna Shanks, manager of typographic marketing. The materials are arranged loosely alphabetically. Files about typefaces are arranged at the end of the series alphabetically. Researchers should consult Series 2: Typefaces for additonal documentation and examples of typefaces developed by Mergenthaler.
