- Arrangement
- Each set is arranged alphabetically by subject and chronologically within a subject grouping, with Army or Navy aeronautical subjects to be found under "Army" and "Navy," respectively. The photographs are mounted on approximately 1,200 leaves per set, though Set I, that set kept by Jones, is more complete. Many of these leaves bear typewritten captions describing their content. Most of the images have been given Smithsonian Institution negative numbers and many possess United States Air Force "A.S." negative numbers as well. A review of the microfiche copy of NASM's biographical files yielded an "Index to Ernest Jones Set of Historical Pictures." A copy of this index forms the appendix to this finding aid. Please see Series VI for two oversized photographs of the Wright School at Montgomery.

- Scope and Contents
- The chronology of American flight envisioned by Jones was to consist solely of textual items. However, a separate project gathered a remarkable collection of early aeronautical photographs into two sets originally consisting of over 1,800 images each. These photographs were taken or collected by Jones between 1906 and 1917, many during his tenure as editor of Aeronautics. One set (herein referred to as Set I) remained in the possession of Jones's estate until its donation to NASM. Another set was donated during Jones's lifetime to the Army Air Service. It is believed that the second set (Set II) had been donated to the Museum by Major General Walter H. Frank in 1961 (R-23-62). These sets were partially intermixed before processing. This collection contains both sets but unfortunately, neither set is complete.
