Scope and Contents
Series 5 documents research for chapters/articles Selig wrote and the illustrated talks she gave about the history of Smithsonian anthropology. Subseries 1 details the research for a 1977 chapter on Smithsonian's research about North American Indians for a SI Press publication, The Smithsonian Experience. Subseries 2 details work with William Fitzhugh on a co-authored Alaska Journal article about SI Alaskan research. Subseries 2 also includes other projects related to Alaska, including the Edward Nelson Arctic collection, examined in the curriculum unit, Of Kayaks and Ulus that accompanied Fitzhugh's exhibition, Inua, Spirit World of the Bering Sea Eskimos. Subseries 3 includes background photo research gathered for several Selig presentations on the history of SI anthropology given to the SI National Associates, the NMNH docents, SI staff attending the SI Archives series Research in Progress, and members of the Cosmos Club. The Series' final folder includes materials illuminating the intertwined history of Smithsonian anthropology, the Bureau of American Ethnology, and the Cosmos Club, a subject of several talks Selig gave after becoming a member of the Cosmos Club (2007) and Research Associate in the Department of Anthropology (2010-2025).
