Scope and Contents
In 1988 Secretary Adams appointed NMNH director Robert Hoffmann as the Assistant Secretary for Research and Tom Freudenheim, Assistant Secretary for Museums; two years later Secretary Adams re-organized again, naming Hoffmann Assistant Secretary for Science. When I. Michael Heyman became Secretary, he re-organized the Smithsonian's entire senior administration, appointing Hoffmann as Acting Provost, in charge of all Smithsonian programmatic activities, and eliminating all other programmatic assistant secretaries. Folder 19 in this subseries includes a 1994 memorandum Selig drafted summarizing the accomplishments and goals for the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Science, against the backdrop of the new Secretary's interest in governance and possible re-organization.
