- This series, dated 1914, 1962-1972, undated, comprises material related to Rankin's studies of Romanian dialects as part of his graduate study and as a part of his Fulbright Fellowship in Romania from 1966-1968. Materials include a card file, maps, a field notebook, research files, and 13 sound recordings. The sound recordings cover a number of different Romanian and Eastern European dialects and appear to have been recorded during his fieldwork. However, the content of the recordings has not been verified.

- The Robert Rankin papers are open for research. Use of archival audiovisual recordings with no duplicate access copy requires advance notice. Computer disks are currently restricted due to preservation concerns. Access to the Robert Rankin papers requires an appointment.
