Short Hills -- Halbach Garden No. 2
Object Details
- General
- This was the garden of Helen Page Wodell and Ernest K. Halbach, whom she married in 1948, at the home to which they moved shortly thereafter. Wodell was the mother of garden designer Lois W. Poinier and grandmother of garden designer Page Sanders. Wodell's design, which accompanied a renovation of the house, featured a rear terrace outlined by stone walls, atop and alongside of which extensive borders were planted. Colorful borders extended beside the house and to the back of the property, accented by specimen trees and flowering trees and shrubs. The garage and driveway area was reconfigured and landscaped to accommodate an addition to the house and to tie this area to the rear terrace and back of the property. The front of the house received a new walk, stone walls, and plantings, bringing unity to the design for the entire site.
