Scope and Contents
Personal correspondence includes letters; emails; and postcards from friends, family, including his sister, Constance Crisp, and his first wife, Danne Emerson, fans, and colleagues. Hughes maintained both personal and professional relationships with authors, journalists, publishers, artists, and other notable figures in the art and literary worlds including Robert Motherwell, John Julius Norwich, Simon Watson Taylor, Avignor Arikha, and Delfina Rattazzi. Also included are letters of support from friends and fans regarding Hughes' 1999 near fatal car crash. Materials in this series are arranged alphabetically and chronologically.

This collection is open for research. Access to original papers requires an appointment and is limited to the Archives' Washington, D.C. Research Center.
