- Marlene Dietrich’s influence on other women cannot be underestimated. In this photograph, Anna May Wong, who co-starred with Dietrich in Shanghai Express (1932), wears a man’s tuxedo suit and top hat. The first person to do so in the public eye was Dietrich, who identified consistently and without apology as a bisexual woman. Dietrich had a palpable influence on Wong since 1930, when they celebrated with Leni Riefenstahl at the Reinmann Art School Ball.
