- Summary
- Painters Jimmy Ernst, Adolph Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell, William Baziotes, Hans Hofmann, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still, Richard Pousette-Dart, Theodore Stamos, Ad Reinhardt, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Bradley Walker Tomlin, Willem de Kooning, Hedda Sterne, James Brooks, Weldon Kees, Fritz Bultman and sculptors Herbert Ferber, David Smith, Ibram Lassaw, Mary Callery, Day Schnabel, Seymour Lipton, Peter Grippe, Theodore Roszak, David Hare and Louise Bourgeois signed this letter in protest against the "monster national exhibition" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition was American Painters, 1900-1950.
The letter indicates that the artists took issue with the exhibit as it was not to include any "advanced art," as those organizing the exhibition were not fond of modern art. All artists listed agreed to not submit any artwork to the jury for the exhibition. - Citation
