Cesar E. Chavez, Mexican American, 1927 - 1993
Description
The Postal Service issued a 37-cent Cesar E. Chavez commemorative stamp in a pressure- sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of twenty stamps on April 23, 2003, in Los Angeles, California. The stamp, designed by Carl T. Herrman, Carlsbad, California, and illustrated by Robert Rodriguez, Pasadena, California, went on sale nationwide April 24, 2003.
Cesar E. Chavez founded the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO (UFW). He was a tireless advocate for nonviolent social change and dedicated his life to working in service of others. For more than three decades Chavez led the first successful farm workers union in American history, achieving dignity, respect, fair wages, medical coverage, pension benefits, and humane living conditions for hundreds of thousands of farm workers. His union efforts brought about the passage of the groundbreaking 1975 California Agricultural Labor Relations Act to protect farm workers. Today, it remains the only law in the nation that protects the right of farm workers to unionize.
Banknote Corporation of America, Inc., of Browns Summit, North Carolina, printed 75 million stamps in offset process, Microprint "USPS".
