Object Details
- Description
- The Postal Service issued a 29-cent commemorative stamp on March 30, 1993, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to honor the fiftieth anniversary of the famous classic of stage and screen, "Oklahoma!" This stamp was the second issued in the Legend of American Music Series. The stamp went on sale at every post office in the state of Oklahoma following the ceremony.
- "Oklahoma!" was chosen for the series because of its stature as a landmark American folk musical. Since its debut in 1943, the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic has been recognized as a milestone that revolutionized the American musical theater. Its title song is also the state song of Oklahoma.
- Late in 1993, a Broadway Musicals booklet featured the "Oklahoma!" stamp and three other musicals -- "My Fair Lady," "Porgy and Bess," and "Show Boat."
- Designed by Wilson McLean of New York City, the stamps were produced in the photogravure process by Stamp Venturers, Inc., and issued in sheets of forty.
