- Description
- This Prominent Americans Issue stamp depicts George Catlett Marshall, an American soldier and statesman. After graduating from the Virginia Military Institute, Marshall served during the First World War, where he working in planning and coordination. He was nominated to the position of Army Chief of Staff by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. His leadership was critical during the Second World War. His post-war work earned him a Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. Following the war, he was appointed to Secretary of State under President Harry Truman; he was later named Secretary of Defense.
