La exposición anual de la Galería Nacional de Retratos del Smithsonian “Adquisiciones Recientes” muestra los últimos retratos incluidos en la prestigiosa colección del museo. Individuos que han hecho contribuciones en áreas como medicina, música, literatura, arte y justicia social están representadas en pinturas, esculturas, grabados, dibujos, fotografías y arte multimedia. La última edición de la muestra estará abierta al público del 17 de noviembre hasta el 4 de noviembre de 2018

Estas adquisiciones se unen a las más de 22.000 obras de arte en la colección del museo que buscan representar a numerosos individuos que han impactado significativamente la historia y la cultura de Estados Unidos. Entre ellos se incluyen al abogado Francis Scott Key, quien escribió la letra de “Star-Spangled Banner”; la exsecretaria de Estado Madeleine Albright; la actriz Gertrude Jeannette; el presidente de la universidad Norman Francis; el fotógrafo Harry Callahan; el diseñador de moda Ralph Lauren; y la actriz ganadora de múltiples premios Rita Moreno. En total, la exposición destaca 25 obras de arte que narran la historia de esta nación a través del arte del retrato.

Los curadores de esta exposición son Brandon Fortune, curadora principal; Ann Shumard, curadora principal de fotografías; Taína Caragol, curadora de pintura y escultura, y arte e historia Latina; Dorothy Moss, curadora de pintura y escultura; Asma Naeem, curadora asociada de grabados, dibujos y arte multimedia; Robyn Asleson, curadora adjunta de grabados, dibujos y arte multimedia y Leslie Ureña, curadora adjunta de fotografías.

La Galería Nacional de Retratos del Smithsonian narra la historia multifacética de Estados Unidos a través de los individuos que han definido su cultura. Por medio de las artes visuales, las artes escénicas y los nuevos medios, la Galería Nacional de Retratos presenta  a poetas y presidentes, visionarios y villanos, actores y activistas cuyas vidas relatan la historia estadounidense.
