The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, in collaboration with the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture and the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts and Santa Fe Indian Market, presents a live concert with acclaimed Native group, A Tribe Called Red. The three-man First Nation’s crew is one of Canada’s most prestigious groups. The event will be Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture located on Museum Hill at 710-708 Camino Lejo, off Old Santa Fe Trail in Santa Fe, N.M. Admission is free and doors open at 8 p.m.

Three Native DJs from Ottawa, Canada, Ian “DJ NDN” Campeau, Dan “DJ Shub” General and Bear Witness, produce A Tribe Called Red’s unique signature style known as Pow Wow Step. Mixing traditional Aboriginal pow wow vocals and drumming with cutting-edge electronic music, the group has become “the face of an urban Native youth renaissance, championing their heritage and speaking out on aboriginal issues, while being on top of popular music, fashion and art.”

A Tribe Called Red released two albums—A Tribe Called Red (2012) and Nation II Nation (2013)—since its creation in 2010. Their self-titled album was part of Washington Post’s top 10 albums of the year in 2012. Released in May 2013, Nation II Nation was nominated for Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award for best group, best producer, best album and best cover art.

The group has impressed people with its exceptional mixing and sound effects showcasing a modern evolution of the pow wow sounds. Very engaged in the community, especially involved with Native Youth, A Tribe Called Red is making the difference in the Native and non-Native music scene.
