Myriam Springuel has been named director of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), effective immediately. Springuel has served as acting director of SITES since February 2014.

Springuel brings more than 30 years of experience in museum management and a deep knowledge of the museum field to the position. She served as director of education and later associate director for programs for SITES from 1986 to 1994. Before that, she curated fine arts exhibitions and developed education programs at The Ringling in Sarasota, Fla.

From 1994 to 2014, Springuel consulted with national and international museums of all sizes and disciplines, helping them respond to change and prepare for the future with clarity about their mission and priorities. She developed strategic plans with boards of trustees and interpretive plans with staff, as well as board training and professional development for a broad array of collecting institutions.

Springuel received her master’s degree in art history from the University of Maryland and a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University.

She succeeds Anna Cohn, who retired as director of SITES in February 2014.
