Piloted by U.S. Air Force Capt. Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager, the Bell X-1 became the first aircraft to travel faster than the speed of sound on October 14, 1947. The Bell X-1 is shown here in Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall at the Museum on the National Mall.
