Students from Virginia’s Great Falls Elementary School presented their salamander-inspired art to (from left) Japanese Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki, the Smithsonian’s Under Secretary for Science, Eva Pell, and the Zoo’s director, Dennis Kelly. Their artwork included drawings, paintings and even sculpture. The students had the chance to help Ambassador Fujisaki name one male salamander and voted for the name Hiro. Guests at the celebratory event took tours of the breeding facility, which is at the Zoo’s Reptile Discovery Center. Visitors will be able to take a peek at the four salamanders in the breeding center for the next few months. A fifth salamander is permanently on exhibit on Asia Trail.
