Gary Hevel, a museum specialist at the Smithsonian Institution, examines a specimen drawer of beetles at the National Museum of Natural History. These beetles, representing many different species from around the world, are only a small fraction of the more than 35 million specimens of insects in the Smithsonian’s entomology collection.
