On view are unfinished portraits of George and Martha Washington by Gilbert Stuart, the most celebrated American portrait painter of his day. The likeness of President Washington was painted from life on April 12, 1796, and served as a basis for numerous replicas by Stuart. The portrait of Martha Washington is the only known likeness of her by Stuart.
