Preserving the Star-Spangled Banner

Visitors can view the Star-Spangled Banner through floor-to-ceiling windows of the specially designed, climate-controlled laboratory. The conservation of the flag, which began in 1998, was completed in early April 2006. An exhibition in front of the lab explains the recent conservation process and the history of the Star-Spangled Banner. The recent conservation efforts will help stabilize the flag; arrest damage from exposure to light, pollution, and changes in humidity over the years; and preserve it for future generations. The recent project is part of former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's "Save America's Treasures" project.
