Each year, a gallery within the museum is devoted to the exploration of the life of one individual. Gallery historian and poet David Ward selected Walt Whitman as the subject of this first exhibition in the series because Whitman "influenced a century of America's foremost writers and artists." Whitman's images, personal memorabilia, and words create a visual portrait.
