For the first time in history, the museum is taking its most prized portrait on the road. The famous and iconic portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart was "saved" from auction by a generous gift in March 2001. In celebration of its acquisition by and for the American people, the portrait will leave the nation's capital for a cross-country tour.
