The Furniture of Sam Maloof

September 14, 2001 – January 21, 2002

Sixty pieces are on view in this first full-scale retrospective of woodworker Sam Maloof's celebrated sculpted furniture, including early prototypes and similar designs from different decades. The exhibition traces the evolution of Maloof's sculptural style from the Scandinavian Modern-inspired designs of the early 1950s through increasingly gestural compositions of the post-1985 period. Many of the pieces come from Maloof's own personal collection used in his home. Also included are photographs of the artist's workshop and hand-crafted residence, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
