This showcase marks the bicentennial of the death of George Washington on December 14, 1799, and discusses the use and display of the museum's Washington collections since they first came to the Smithsonian Institution in 1883. Objects on view include his sword, surveyor's compass, part of his camp mess chest, household goods, and the brass candle stand he is said to have used while writing his Farewell Address.
