The Disability Rights Movement

Marking the 10th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, this exhibition examines the history of activism by people with disabilities, their friends, and families to secure the civil rights guaranteed to all Americans. Objects on view include the pen President George Bush used to sign the Act and one of the 1st ultralight wheelchairs. The exhibition is designed for maximum accessibility. Web-based kiosks—prototypes for a version that will eventually be available to museums and other cultural institutions—provide alternate formats to experience the exhibition.
